Tammany Hall was the Democratic machine that dominated NYC politics for nearly a century. It is most often associated w/ corruption, graft, top hats, & fat cats like Boss Tweed. The leaders of Tammany Hall understood their power relied upon the waves of immigrants pouring into NYC. For all its obvious corruption, it did give a voice to the voiceless immigrant-- the downtrodden, the discriminated, the disenfranchised. They helped pass a lot of social reform legislation such as work place safety regs, work hours, benefits for widows & children, regulations on stock exchange, workman's comp, etc. Regardless of Tammany's legacy, its overall impact on the history & heritage of NY can't be denied.
